Reflection #2 (creativity, action)- Assisting Ballet Classes

When I started to become more passionate in dancing ballet, I began to yearn to teach ballet to other students. This eventually became one of my future dreams, to become a ballet teacher. Fortunately, in my ballet academy, Le Conservatoire De Danse De Ballet, my artistic director, Jacqueline, gave me this opportunity to assist baby classes. The moment I heard about this I was very glad and overjoyed. Though I am not a teacher but just an assistant, it was the first step to become one. The class I will be assisting is on Saturday at 9:30am. This time made me a bit worried because usually I would sleep until 10 or 11am on the weekends. But I considered it as a positive thing because it may train me to sleep earlier and wake up earlier.
On September 14, Saturday, it was the first day of class to assist the kids. I was very excited and at the same time nervous. I love children so I didn’t think that I would have a hard time assisting them. However, when we began the class it took me many hands to correct them. There were about 25 students so it was wild and sometimes they were out of control. Within 20 minutes, I was already feeling tired which surprised me because I didn’t know it would be this tiring.

We first demonstrated the exercises without the music, and then the children did it with the teacher and with the music. Although it took a lot of efforts to assist them, the majority of the time was very fun and I enjoyed it. Sometimes I would laugh or giggle because they look so cute when trying to follow the steps. After the class ends, I would give them a sticker and sometimes hug them. Overall, I learned that dealing with children is not so easy and it takes a lot of commitment and patience as well. Later on, I would like to be closer to them and get to remember all of their names someday.

Reflection #1 (creativity)- Pep Rally 2013

This year's Pep Rally was very special for Red House because we finally won first place! Since this was a rare thing to happen, we were so happy and overwhelmed with the result. I felt so happy that I almost cried. Well actually I was in tears already in the inside, and I am sure every Red House member was also very contented. In fact, I haven't expected this outcome because we have lost the opportunity to win Pep Rally for more than 5 years so I just thought of this activity lightly. But when realizing that we won first place, I was actually shocked and surprised. Well, of course, our leaders did a great job on guiding our way but I just happened to think that the other houses did absolutely great as well so I thought yellow or blue would win. I guess our hard work had finally paid off.
I personally think blue house’s dance was really nice because they made their dance step like a musical play. Also, they made this huge hawk which I thought was awesome. However, unfortunately, the blue house won third place in the dance category. Yellow house’s dance was also cool and funny because they danced one of Korea’s k-pop dances. They won first place in the dance category and I think they deserved it. Red house won second, which I thought was still a satisfied rank. Despite this competition, I think everyone enjoyed watching and dancing the steps.
This activity not only boosted our competition level but it also helped us to be more creative in seeking for a good theme, dance, cheers, and cooperation of the members. Regardless of the many new house leaders, they were still able to lead the team well and do their best. For the past years, red house had lost the opportunity to win first place in pep rally so this year I think not many people anticipated much or were less enthusiastic with the results. I even heard some red house members wanting to change their houses because of our failure. However, we were able to win which increased our potential to gain hope and restore our enthusiasm back to life. Now, we seem to be proud of our house.
Overall, from this activity I learned a lot. Despite the fact that Red house has failed to win pep rally the previous years, we did not give up but continued and we were able to succeed this goal we had for years. We began to change our perspective about Red house which made me feel glad. Moreover, this activity boosted our spirits and showed that Red house is improving gradually. No matter what the outcome is, I think the potential, process, and enthusiasm is more important.

Proposal #1 (creativity, action)- Assisting Ballet Classes

Activity:

This activity is to assist ballet for baby classes. Essentially, I am going to correct the basic movements and positioning of the little ones and aid them in doing the right postures. In more detail: we will be doing some warm ups, stretches, jumping, skipping, learn to point our toes, know the distinction between the first, second, and third position, and to learn how to bow to our teachers after the class dismisses.

Learning Goals:

  • My personal goals are to make ballet classes fun, enjoyable and at the same time to encourage or generate the students in willing to learn a new step.
  • One of my other goals is to help them improve their ballet skills so that when they grow older they will be able to do more challenging steps.
  • From this activity, I expect to learn to be more patient in dealing with the children and to get along with them as if I am their older sister.
  • In addition, although there might me times when I get tired or sluggish in assisting the children, I would respect their learning time and try to be more enthusiastic.
  • Furthermore, I want to set as a good example for them and be a role model.
  • Through this activity, I hope I would communicate well with the children, get to know their names, and be comfortable being with them.
  • As a result of this activity, I would also gain to be responsible and being capable in caring and guiding the children.

Timeline:

  • Where- Porta Vaga at Le Conservatoire De Danse De Ballet
  • How often- every once a week (Saturday morning)
  • How long- about an hour (9:30am-10:30am)
  • Started to assist- September 14, 2013 Saturday
